Each week, The London West Tincaps Major Rookie team will select an MLB player of the week. This may be a current player on a hot streak, a former baseball great or someone we want to recognize and learn about.
This week's player of the week is Jim Abbott.
James Anthony Abbott was born in Flint Michigan on September 19, 1967. In his 10 seasons in the majors, he spent time with the California Angels, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers. In his career, the left handed pitcher had a 87-108 win-loss record with a 4.25 ERA and amassed 888 strikeouts. On September 4, 1993, as a member of the New York Yankees, he threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians.
While his numbers suggest he was just an average major league pitcher, what Jim Abbott accomplished was remarkable considering he was born with one hand. His determination and ability to overcome adversity is a lesson for all and a true testament that you can do anything you set your mind to!
